DIY Tips #1
Make sure you are locked out, test all doors.
It’s surprising how often a house or car has a door open that I’m called to open up.
Your neighbor may have a key for your house if you didn’t change the locks when you moved in.
Key won’t pull out of the lock but locks and unlocks.
Position the key in the cylinder where you usually remove it, put one finger against the face of the cylinder then pull out the key. Put some graphite into the keyhole and
the lock will most likely work smoothly again.

DIY Tips #4
Key is hard to turn in a deadbolt when the door is open.
Spray some silicon spray on the backset (the part that goes into the frame),
This might fix it or remove the thumb turn and spray some silicon spray on the backset inside the door as well.
Key is hard to turn in a deadbolt when the door is closed.
First check to make sure the hinge screws are tight, this might fix the problem.
Or file out the strike plate or wood inside the strike to allow the backset to work properly.
DIY Tips #6
Quite often the broken key is not inside the lock, but you think it is because you look into the keyway and you think you see the key. But what you are seeing is the pins or wafers inside the lock. Or you just guess it must be in the lock. Sometimes my customers have a spare key but they didn’t try it in the lock. Other times the lock just needed graphite to allow their spare key to operate smoothly. If you don’t have a spare key the broken piece might be in your pocket, purse, floor mat in the car, beside the car and with both pieces a locksmith can make another key for you.
